New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, lies at the southern tip of the North Island and is set on one of the world’s most spectacular harbours surrounded by the hills of Wellington’s Town Belt – a reserve encircling the city.
Wellington is a city of gourmands (it has more bars, restaurants and cafés per head than New York) and is the home of New Zealand’s hobbit-led film industry. By basing himself here, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has guaranteed the future of ‘Welliwood’.
As well as being a major commercial centre, it offers a wide range of cultural and leisure activities for the visitor. Places to visit include Te Papa our national museum, the Wellington Zoo, the Maritime Museum, the recently refurbished Parliament Buildings, the National Library, Katherine Mansfield’s House and the Cable Car.
From the city centre it is only a quick drive to mountains, open countryside and rugged coastlines. The Wellington region includes five cities and districts: Wellington, Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua and Kapiti. The region offers a wide variety of landscapes.
